ROMEO & PUBLIKA
16-22/12/2008, Mavrica, project commissioned by En-Knap Group
ROMEO & PUBLIKA is a site-specific performance about theatre and its fundamental relation between the performer and the spectator. Through the use of different performative formats and forms of engagement the project explores the conditions, confines, limits, possibilities and freedom of theater essentially as a place of encounter. By establishing conditions of proximity it opens space to look at the possibility or impossibility of one’s relation with the other to take place.

Between me and you, mine and yours (world, body, self) is an unbridgeable difference, interval, which exactly because of that has to be strengthened, so that any kind of relationship between the two can be established at all. … Only the performer’s confession of vulnerability, which although avoids the status of a victim, meaning his own death, so that consequently the spectator could rise from it, and the consciousness that the starting position of humanity is human being as homo sacer, lead to the healing of the original wound in the activity of closeness. (B. Lukan, Upor krotkih teles, B. Lukan, The Revolt of Meek Bodies)
A two hour theatrical performance is not a simple, linear artistic passion play, but through a well-organized executive logic of coincidences a multi-layered set of issues addressing not only the viewers but also both, authors and performers: questions on the capabilities of theater, the role and place of the spectator as well as the role and place of the performers in experienced imaginarium of the spectator. The responses depend on the success or failure of the individual meeting between the theater and the spectator and are therefore certainly different, but Romeo with its thoroughly thought through concept, skillful performance and some very powerful scenes definitely moved experiential-cognitive limits in the audience.(M.Kumerdej, Igraj (se) z mano! Romeo and publika, the latest production of EnKnapGroup, induces intimacy, questioning of our identity and exclusiveness. (G. Troha, Čas za spoznavanje sebe, DNEVNIK)
